Quick rules
Name the direction, not just the source"soft window light from camera-left" beats "nice lighting". Tell it where the light comes from and it obeys.
One dominant light, one accentPick a main source, then add at most one accent like a rim or a warm glow. More than two sources muddies the image.
Match the light to the hour and placeCandlelight indoors at night, god-rays in a forest at dawn. Physically sensible lighting renders far cleaner than a random mix.
